Portland on Film

As you may have seen in my last post on small scale retail, my family and I recently went on a trip to Portland Oregon. I have done a couple of travel posts on Portland before (here and here), though that was almost a decade ago. For this post, I thought I would just focus on the images of the city rather than a detailed travelogue.

I have been increasingly shooting film over the last few years, but I have still needed to use my digital camera for travel, because there was part of me that still didn’t quite trust myself. And to be fair, there is a risk that you will open the camera back, or the developing won’t go as planned or an important shot is out of focus and you didn’t know, but there are some risks with digital too. I mean you can have am SD Card Fail or you can not have a back-up battery when out. Well, for whatever reason I decided that this was going to be a trip captured on film. Rip off the band-aid. I mean I used to travel to other continents in my youth and I had no choice but to take a bunch of rolls of film to capture my time there. In those situations, I couldn’t even look at the pictures for months sometimes and it was okay. We have all become so used to having a digital camera that even the slightest inconvenience causes us angst. That said, for full transparency, I still took my digital camera with me on the trip, I even took it out one night, though it didn’t work out that well for the situation (neither would have film). For the rest of the week though, it was my film camera that came out around the city with us while the digital camera stayed back at the house we were staying at. In some ways there was a liberation in making that choice because it made me a little more thoughtful in what I wanted to capture, though not that much, I mean I still shot three rolls in just a few days.

As I said at the beginning, this is not a travelogue. Instead I am just going to lay out the photos in sequential order by film type. I have removed pretty much all of the pictures of my family and a few that were out of focus. The pictures start as we left Victoria and then move into the Mississippi Avenue area then on to Washington Park, the area around the Science Center, the Alberta Arts District and finally a couple from our trip back up through Mt. Vernon on the way home. If you have any questions about a particular photo, please don’t hesitate to ask in the comments. Put on a Dandy Warhols or the Decemberists Album and make your way through them. Hope you enjoy!
